Our curriculum follows USA Wrestling’s Athlete Development Model: fundamentals and fun for the youngest wrestlers, then more technique and competition as they grow.
The winter season runs November through March at the Herndon High School wrestling room, with Mason Dixon League meets on weekends.
| Session | Grades | Days | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | K – 4th | Tuesday & Thursday | 6:00 – 7:15 PM |
| 2 | 5th – 8th | Tuesday & Thursday | 7:15 – 8:45 PM |
| Fall | Ages 7 – 14 | One night a week (Sept – Oct) | Preseason session, see registration |
Coaches may move a wrestler to a different session based on skill, size, and experience. Days and times are subject to change.
We follow USA Wrestling’s three-level folkstyle curriculum. Each wrestler moves up as their skill and readiness grow, not on a fixed timeline.
We believe in competition, but we don’t push it on our youngest athletes. USA Wrestling’s development model warns that competing too early can hurt a child’s love of the sport.
Tournaments are never required. A wrestler competes when they are physically and mentally ready, a decision made together by the wrestler, their parents, and the coaches. When they do compete, they are matched with opponents of similar age, weight, and experience.
The Rhinos are part of the wider Northern Virginia wrestling community. Throughout the season we add:
The MDWL is a youth league for wrestlers up to age 14, with about 19 teams across Northern Virginia, the West Virginia panhandle, Hagerstown MD, and south-central Pennsylvania. It welcomes beginners and experienced wrestlers alike, pairing each wrestler with an opponent of equal weight and experience.
Registration includes USA Wrestling membership and insurance, a Rhinos T-shirt, all practices, and the Mason Dixon League regular season. Financial assistance is available. Just ask.
